Mrs Olusegun narrating her ordeal
By CECILIA AGHARANYA
A one-storey building has collapsed in Oke-Ado, Ibadan injuring a woman who is resident in an adjourning building.
The kitchen and two rooms of the dilapidated building on 10 Ajanla Street, Oke-Ado came down at about 5 pm on June 9 as repair works were being done on it.
CEOAfrica gathered that the situation would have been worse if the residents had not heeded the advice of the bricklayer who was working on the ground floor of the “weak and dilapidated” building.
The bricklayer had earlier advised the residents to vacate the building because he realised that the building was too weak to survive the “patch, patch” job he was asked to do.
One of the residents of the area, who spoke with our reporter but demanded anonymity for fear of reprisal, said he or she noticed that pebbles were falling off the building and he or she decided not to take the route beside the building.
Unfortunately, one Mrs Sherifat Olusegun, who lives on 15 Ajanla Street, sustained injury as she was about to leave her one-room apartment for church. Part of the rubbles from the collapsing building fell on her room; both houses were beside each other and not properly spaced.
Fortunately, she was the only victim, so far, from the collapse. Sherifat was attended to by members of the Red Cross Society.
However, the owner of the collapsed building could not be reached because our reporter was shielded from him or her for fear of police involvement.
Another resident in the neighbourhood said to forestall a recurrence, “it is pertinent that the state housing ministry visits this community because there are many dilapidated buildings that should be demolished in the area and provision made for the relocation of the residents as most of them cannot afford decent accommodation.”
