Contrary to speculations, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Attahiru Jega, will quit offices June 30.

There have been speculations, notably on social media, that the INEC chairman would quit office on June 8 at the end of his fiveyear tenure. He was appointed in June 2010 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, succeeding Prof. Maurice Iwu. However, INEC spokesperson, Nick Dazang, said that Jega would be in office until the end of the month.

“The chairman’s tenure would end on June 30 and he is still in office,” he said.

Dazang also said Jega was not in his office yesterday because he had travelled out of Nigeria on official assignment.

Jega, shortly after the last general election held on March 28 and April 11, said he would not be seeking for a fresh term in office.
