Police Arraign Farmer For Stealing N500m Worth Items

The police in Ogun yesterday arraigned a 34-year-old farmer, Ariyo Fadipe before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court for alleged burglary of a hotel belonging to former governor Gbenga Daniel.

Fadipe whose farm borders the uncompleted Golf Resort Hotel in Oke-Mosan, allegedly stole various items from the facility valued at N500 million from the property.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Famous Edigbue told the court that the farmer committed the offences sometimes in April 2014 at about 6:00p.m at the hotel.

The police prosecutor added that the accused stole 300 pieces of 32 inches plasma television, two gold-plated coffee table, 40 pieces of three horse power air conditioners, 30 pieces of B205 swivel chair and 20 C63 bar table.

“The accused, a farmer who’s farm is close to the golf resort burgled the building where all the items were stored and went there from time to cart away the items.

“The police through a “tip-off” traced the accused and caught him in the act with four 32 inches plasma television,” he said.

Edigbue said that the offences contravened Sections 516, 410, 411 (2) and 390 (3) of the Criminal Laws of Ogun, 2006.

But the accused pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of burglary and theft.

Counsel to the farmer, Adebayo Ogungbemi applied for the bail of the accused in liberal terms.

Magistrate Babajide Ilo granted the accused bail in the sum of 500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ilo also ordered that the accused be remanded in Ibara Prison till the terms for his bail were met.

The magistrate adjourned the case to May 19 for further hearing.
