The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to cease internal bickering and media hostilities in the aftermath of the 2015 general elections.

He made the call during the inauguration of the PDP Post-election Review Committee at the party’s headquarters in Abuja yesterday

Ekweremadu, who is the Chairman of the newly inaugurated Committee empathized with party faithfuls over PDP’s poor outing in the 2015 general elections, but expressed the hope that “the PDP will bounce back very soon”.

He maintained that “change is the only constant thing in life” noting that “much as we are pained by the sad turn of events, we must come to terms with the fact that anger, recriminations, self-pity, and blame trading will not take us even an inch away from the harsh outcomes of the elections”.

He added in a statement issued by his Special adviser Media Uche Anichukwu : “In the interest of our party, we call on party faithfuls to cease all internal bickering and media hostilities. Such tendencies are not only capable of further deepening the challenges we currently face, but also wrongly portraying us as confused, frustrated, stranded, and bad losers. We must be careful lest we play into the hands of our opponents.

“The worst tragedy that could befall the PDP is not to have lost the 2015 presidential election or our majority status at the National Assembly or some PDP controlled states to the opposition. The greatest tragedy would be our failure to draw from the lessons embedded in the outcome of the elections”.

He enjoined party faithfuls to remain in the PDP and rebuild it instead of running to already-made shelters.

Senator Ekweremadu observed that the seeming dwindle in the PDP’s fortunes was “an opportunity to reassess and reinvent our party to retake its rightful place”.

The Deputy President of the Senate said the essence of the Post-election Review Committee was underscored by the need for the party “to understand its past to be able to chart a better future, for unless a man knows where the rain started beating him, he would never know where it stopped”.

Senator Ekweremadu assured that members of the Committee would carry out their assignments to the best of their ability and “without fear or favour”. He called on members of the party to avail the Committee all necessary information in line with its terms of reference as all shades of opinion will be heard”.

Meanwhile, inaugurating the Committee earlier, the National Chairman of the PDP, Alh. Adamu Mu’azu, commended the party for accepting the outcome of the 2015 general election in good faith rather than threatening to make the country ungovernable or to form a parallel government.

The Chairman who was represented by the party’s National Secretary, Professor Adewale Oladipo, also relayed the President’s message calling on party faithfuls to “desist from unwarranted attacks on members and leaders of the party”, insisting that “the party must move forward irrespective of what the result of the election was”.

The Chairman said the crux of the Committee’s assignment was to identify the remote and immediate causes of the poor performance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections.

Others include to critically look at the preparations and build-up of the PDP to the 2015 General Elections and determine its adequacies and lapses, and to propose a roadmap for the party to recover its past glory”.
