The Kaduna State chapter of the North-east Zone Peoples Forum at the weekend urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the position of the senate president to the North-east.
The group at a news conference after its meeting in Kaduna, also endorsed Senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe State for the position of the senate president.
Leader of the group, Alhaji Ibrahim Babashani, who addressed the press conference, said the North-east had suffered marginalisation for too long and should be given the position.
He maintained that the zone produced the second largest votes that gave the APC victory during the presidential elections, stressing that the appropriate way to reciprocate such massive support was to concede the senate presidency to the zone in order to carry the people of the area alone.
“It is on record that the North-east has long been marginalised in terms of positions in the National Assembly and we feel that this is the time to correct such marginalisation and give us a sense of belonging.
“The forum is making a passionate appeal to the leadership of the APC to concede the zoning arrangement to the North-east” Babashani said.
According to him, the person that is most suitable for the position from the North-east, is Senator Ahmed Lawal, considering his wealth of experience in the senate and his impeccable character.
He stated further that “Lawan is a man of impeccable track record, unquestionably integrity and some one who has never been indicted for any corrupt practices, declaring that there can never be a more suitable person for the position than a man with such qualities.
“Lawan has been very consistent as an opposition and has never compromised his stance in both the red and green chambers of the National Assembly,” he added.
He urged stakeholders to eschew all forms of sentiments and selfish interest that might scuttle the chances of the North-east in producing the senate president.
