Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, was on Thursday shot at while on a door-to-door campaign at Rumuolumeni community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

According to Thisday, Sources said the governor and his entourage were attacked by thugs suspected to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A source said while the governor was unhurt in the attack, two APC supporters were injured.
A day earlier, the governor had raised the alarm that he was been targeted for assassination.

A statement issued by the Director of Communications, Greater Together Campaign Organisation (the governorship campaign outfit of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state), Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said the attackers were repelled by Amaechi's security details.

Semenitari, who is also the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, said: "In keeping with their plans to attack and assassinate chieftains and members of the All Progressives Congress, thugs of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ambushed the convoy of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who was on a door-to-door campaign in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor, Rivers State. Obio/Akpor is the home local government area of Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike, governorship candidate of the PDP.
"The thugs were repelled by the governor’s security personnel.

Speaking to THISDAY last night, Governor Amaechi lamented that most people did not take him serious when he raised the alarm that he was a target of an assassination squad.
He denied that the alarm was a mere propaganda stunt stressing that, “I cannot do propaganda with my life”, adding that, "I had to drive through the burnfire set by the PDP thugs to prevent me from leaving the area".

The statement by Seminatari alleged further that the PDP in Rivers State had concluded plans to launch house-to-house attack on APC chieftains in the state with the aide of security personnel.

"The APC wishes to draw the attention of the police and other security agents to this unwholesome development on the eve of the election scheduled for March 28th.

"It is more worrisome seeing that a few days ago a team of security personnel visited Governor Amaechi’s hometown to carry out a reconnaissance. The visit coincided with authoritative information that Governor Amaechi had been marked for assassination by a combined team of the army and state security service personnel.

"The Rivers State Government wishes to remind our security agencies that they owe their allegiance first of all to Nigeria and to its people. They therefore must remember that they owe every Nigerian a duty of protection regardless of the person’s religious, political or social affiliation," it said.

The police were yet to confirm the incident as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Ahmad Muhammad, (DSP), did not take calls placed on his phone last night.
