First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Jumoke Akinjide, on Wednesday, told the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major General Muhammadu Buhari, to perish the thought of his being elected as president on Saturday because “there is no vacancy in Aso Rock.”
Dame Jonathan, Akinjide and other female leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spoke in Ibadan at the PDP women presidential campaign, held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, to galvanise women and youths for the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Addressing the crowd at the rally, the First Lady called on the people of Oyo State and Nigerians, especially women and youths, to re-elect Jonathan on the strength of his achievements in the last five years and vote for the governorship candidate of the PDP in Oyo State, Senator Teslim Folarin, during the April 11 governorship election.
She reeled out some of the achievements of her husband in areas like transportation, agriculture, education and health sectors respectively, saying that the president had demonstrated strong commitment to the needs of the Nigerian people through his transformation agenda.
“Great men and women of Oyo State, I was younger when we had functional rail system in Nigeria. When my children asked me about the rail system, I had to take them abroad to see train. But President Jonathan has corrected this by resuscitating the rail system,” she said.
She urged the crowd to go home and tell their neighbours about the desirability of voting Jonathan on Saturday and rejecting the APC which she described as an expired drug that could not cure any ailment.
Akinjide, in her remark, charged the people of the state to vote massively for President Jonathan and all the PDP candidates on Saturday and repeat same on April 11 for the governorship and state assembly candidates of the party.
“Political battles are not won on the pages of newspapers through deceits and propaganda, but by performing well in office, which President Jonathan has done very well. The people of Oyo State have seen through the falsehood and deceit of the APC and they will demonstrate this by voting for the PDP on Saturday.
“Our prayer in PDP is ‘God, give us men and women. The APC is saying ‘God, give us men.’ It is the prayer of the PDP that God will answer. Jonathan gave 35 per cent of appointive positions to women and took women out of the shadows,” Akinjide said.
