
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Oyo State and the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), on Monday, held a closed door meeting in Ibadan, ahead of March 28 and April 11 elections.
Security agencies present at the meeting included the Police, Army, Immigration, Customs, Prisons, State Security Service (SSS), NDLEA and NYSC.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Mohammed Katsina, Oyo State Commissioner of Police, said they met to strategise ahead of the elections.
“The meeting was a continuation of our resolve to ensure that before, during and after the elections, the atmosphere will be safe for electorate and other stakeholders.
“We are determined to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections and to assure the general public that we will spare nobody at ensuring peace and security,” he said.
The commissioner of police, who called on the electorate to come out to vote, said that anybody whose conduct was against the spirit of the game would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
He commended all other security agencies that attended the meeting held to ensure security of lives and property.
Ambassador Rufus Akeju, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, told journalists that the meeting was aimed at mapping out strategies to checkmate troublemakers during the elections.
He said that all security agencies were ready for the polls.
Akeju further hinted that: “sensitive materials will be moved to the 351 registration area camps. The poll officials will also be moved into the camps in order to ensure timely arrival at the voting points on Saturday, 28 March, 2015.”
He also assured that in order to ensure credible polls, “The state will receive a large number of both local and foreign observers.”
