Portsmouth Ladies striker, Ini Umotong, says she is not afraid of playing under ‘harsh weather’ condition in Africa.
The tall striker, who was born in Calabar, but raised in England, was included in Super Falcons - 6coach Edwin Okon’s 36-man list in preparation for the 2015 All African Games, 2015 Women’s World Cup and the 2016 Olympics qualifying games.
It’s the first time Umotong has been called-up by Nigeria and the news caps a sensational season for the prolific striker, who has scored 20 goals in 15 games this term.
The Economics and Actuarial Science undergraduate at the University of Southampton has had to skip the first two weeks of the camp due to her studies and despite complaints of the harsh weather condition by some African players abroad, Umotong says that won’t be a problem for her.
The player, who was offered a full scholarship to play Division One soccer at Wright State University in Ohio, America, when she was 18, said, “I have experience playing in the heat from America. I also have access to facilities that can prepare me for playing in different climates which my coach will be working with me to do. I understand it will be different but hopefully I can adapt to it.”
Umotong has been instrumental in Portsmouth’s terrific form this season. She scored twice as the Blues beat Poole Town 7-0 in the semi-final of the Hampshire FA Challenge Cup.
She continued her remarkable form with a hat-trick as Pompey Ladies beat Blackburn 5-4 to reach the FA Women’s Cup fourth round.
Umotong also hit the winner as Pompey Ladies beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 to reach the FA Women’s Premier League Cup semi-finals.
