The Speaker of the House of Representatives and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday pledged to provide free education for non-indigenes in primary and secondary schools in the state, if elected.

Tambuwal made the pledge at a town hall meeting organised by the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto held at the Giginya Hotel, Sokoto.

He maintained that if elected, non indigenes in the state would benefit from free education just like the indigenes of the state.

“I will see to the possibility that non-indigenes in primary and secondary schools in the state get free education, if I am elected,”Tambuwal averred.

The APC governorship candidate underscored the need for mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims for peaceful co-existence.

According to him, God has a reason for bringing Muslims and Christians together
in Nigeria and as such it behoves on leaders to promote mutual understanding and harmony among the citizens in the country.

“As leaders, we must continue to promote dialogue and promote mutual understanding among Nigerians because we need one another for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

“So, what we need as leaders is to encourage confidence building among the people we lead, “he stated.

In a remark, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, said the meeting was meant to serve as a bridge-building effort to help the citizens come to a proper understanding of one another.

He described the town hall meeting as one of the unintended benefits of the postponement of the elections, saying Tambuwal’s entrance into the Sokoto governorship race had added value to the race.

He called on Nigerians to forget the insinuations of conspiracies and continue to work hard to ensure that elections are peaceful and successful.

Also speaking,the Coordinator of JDPC, Victor Mordi, said the group had carried out projects nationwide that foster human development and democracy.

He stated that the town hall meeting was initiated to serve as a catalyst for further conversation between resident communities and the government for peace to reign in the state.
