The United States military has confirmed plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others in a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

The Pentagon disclosed on Thursday that the execution was scheduled for December 3 at the military base, with further details expected to be announced.

The execution would mark the first US military execution in more than 65 years.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed the plan during an interview with conservative television outlet Real America’s Voice on Wednesday, saying the authorities would make the execution accessible for public viewing.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public,” Hegseth said.

Hasan, a US-born Muslim of Palestinian descent, opened fire on November 5, 2009, at a medical facility inside Fort Hood, a major military installation used by American troops preparing for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The attack claimed 13 lives, including 12 military personnel, while 32 others were injured. Of the wounded, 30 were soldiers. Hasan was shot and partially paralysed by a civilian police officer who responded to the shooting.

Reports indicated that Hasan opposed the US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. He had also communicated online with Anwar al-Awlaki, a US-born radical cleric linked to al-Qaeda, who was later killed in a US drone strike in Yemen.

The planned execution has attracted attention because of its public livestreaming arrangement and the lengthy period since the US military last carried out an execution.
