Tension erupted in Jega, Kebbi State, over the weekend after some youths pulled down campaign posters and billboards belonging to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Nasir Idris.

The incident, according to report, occurred on Saturday when the youths, who were returning from a football match, began protesting against the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The protesters reportedly chanted “bamaso,” meaning “we don’t want,” as they moved through major roads in the town, tearing down APC posters and destroying billboards mounted at strategic locations.

The youths were also said to have thrown stones during the demonstration, while the windscreens of several vehicles belonging to a car dealer in the area were reportedly smashed.

The protest was eventually brought under control following the deployment of security operatives, after which normalcy returned to the area.

Reacting to the development, the APC State Publicity Secretary, Isah Assalafi, called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the destruction.

Assalafi urged security agencies to act decisively, stressing that no individual involved should be protected on the basis of political affiliation, position or influence.

He also called on other political parties and their leaders in the state to take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters and promote peaceful democratic engagement.

“The APC would continue to support every lawful effort to protect lives, secure communities and preserve democratic participation in the state,” he said.
