Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The family described the celebrated actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and called for privacy as they mourn his passing.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” Olusoji wrote.

He added: “We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most prominent actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.

He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and began his professional career in British television and international productions before returning to Nigeria, where he became a major figure in the country’s film industry.

Jacobs appeared in more than 100 films and was recognised for his commanding performances across stage and screen. His honours included the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival. He was also conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

Beyond acting, Jacobs was involved in film production and the development of performing arts in Nigeria. He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were associated with the Lufodo Group and its performing arts initiatives.

His death marks the end of a distinguished career that spanned more than five decades and left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
