African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s electoral relevance, claiming that he lacks the political influence to determine the outcome of elections.
Atiku made the assertion on Wednesday while reacting to Obasanjo’s reported refusal to endorse his 2027 presidential ambition.
The former Vice President said Obasanjo’s electoral strength was limited, arguing that he could not secure victory in his home state or the South-West during the 1999 presidential election.
“In 1999, he could not even win his own state or the Southwest; it was Arewa that made him President. He possesses no electoral value,” Atiku said.
Atiku and Obasanjo have had a strained political relationship since leaving office in 2007 after completing two terms as President and Vice President respectively.
Atiku had earlier explained that his opposition to Obasanjo’s controversial third-term bid was based on his commitment to protecting Nigeria’s Constitution and democracy, rather than personal considerations.
On the 2027 presidential election, Atiku also pointed to his record of empowering young Nigerians during his time as Vice President.
He said several young people who were given opportunities to serve under the administration have since risen to become governors, ministers, directors and other senior public officials.
Atiku pledged that, if elected president in 2027, he would continue to create opportunities for young Nigerians to participate in governance and assume leadership roles.
