A staff member of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has died after being electrocuted while repairing a fault on an electricity pole opposite the Federal Polytechnic Satellite Campus in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The incident occurred over the weekend as the technician was working to restore electricity to residents following a power outage in the area.

Eyewitnesses said the worker was on top of the electricity pole when he suddenly became weak and appeared disoriented, prompting his colleagues to raise the alarm.

His fellow BEDC workers immediately attempted to rescue him before operatives of the Ekiti State Fire and Emergency Service arrived at the scene to assist in bringing him down from the pole.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but was later confirmed dead while receiving medical attention, according to hospital sources.

The tragedy is the second fatal electrocution involving a power company worker at the same location. In 2012, a staff member of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), identified as Samuel Isaac, also lost his life after being electrocuted while carrying out official duties in the area.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of electricity workers engaged in high-risk maintenance operations. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
