A commercial bus driver has been arrested over his alleged involvement in a fatal crash that claimed the life of a passenger and left several others injured during a trip from Onitsha to Lagos.
The suspect, identified as Ifeanyi Okwuaja, is said to be a driver with Abia City Mass Transit.
According to a viral video circulating online, Okwuaja allegedly engaged in a heated argument with a passenger seated beside him during the journey and was heard threatening the passenger.
The video further alleged that upon reaching the Ijebu-Ode axis, the driver deliberately steered the bus into a stationary truck by the roadside.
The passenger involved in the altercation reportedly died on the spot, while several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash.
Following the incident, Okwuaja allegedly fled the scene and returned to his hometown in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State without reporting the crash to the authorities.
Police operatives, working in collaboration with Abia City Mass Transit, subsequently tracked the suspect to his hometown, where he was arrested.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, Okoye Henry, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, said the driver had been taken into custody.
The police have yet to disclose further details of the investigation or the charges that may be brought against the suspect.
