Chad has announced plans to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying the tribunal has failed to deliver effective and balanced justice since its establishment.

The government made the announcement on Monday, stating that the decision followed a thorough review of the ICC's performance since it began operations in 2002.

In a statement, a government spokesperson said the court's record has been marked by limited effectiveness and uneven application across different regions.

"This decision is the result of an in-depth review of the functioning of the International Criminal Court since it began operating in 2002, as well as its record, whose effectiveness remains limited and uneven across different regions," the spokesperson said.

Chad did not specify when it would formally begin the withdrawal process. Under the Rome Statute, a member state's withdrawal from the ICC generally takes effect one year after the United Nations Secretary-General receives its official notification.
