Boko Haram has released a propaganda video paying tribute to one of its media operatives, Abu Salim al-Barnawi, who was killed by Nigerian troops during a failed attack on a military base in Borno State.

The Acting Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, shared excerpts of the video on Wednesday.

According to the military, al-Barnawi was among scores of Boko Haram fighters killed last week during a fierce gun battle in the Lake Chad Basin after the insurgents launched an assault on a Nigerian military camp.

Captain Goni said the deceased served as the group's videographer and media operative.

“Al-Barnawi was killed last week by the Nigerian Army when the terrorist group attacked a Nigerian military camp. He was the cameraman and had previously led raids into Cameroon before joining the media wing of the terrorist group,” Goni said.

The three-minute, three-second propaganda video features al-Barnawi handling communication equipment and participating in media-related activities before his death.

The release of the tribute is seen as an attempt by the terrorist group to honour one of its propaganda personnel following the failed attack and his death during the military operation.
