Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has called on governments at all levels to increase investment in education, particularly in the training of healthcare professionals, stressing that no country can attain sustainable development without building its human capital.
Obi made the appeal during a visit to the School of Nursing Sciences, Emekuku, in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, where he addressed the institution’s management, staff and students.
Speaking to the students, Obi underscored the importance of healthcare workers in society, describing them as essential to the wellbeing and productivity of the population.
“The world needs you more than you need the world because healthcare professionals are indispensable to the wellbeing and productivity of society,” he said.
The former governor noted that his visit was part of his ongoing engagement with educational and healthcare institutions across the country aimed at promoting investment in key sectors critical to national growth.
According to him, leaders must concentrate on building effective institutions that can produce skilled professionals while creating opportunities for citizens to realise their potential.
“Our vision must be to build a Nigeria where functional institutions produce competent professionals, where investments are directed to critical sectors that lift people out of poverty, and where every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to succeed,” Obi stated.
He added that such a vision would help create a society where success is based on merit rather than connections.
Obi expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded by the School of Nursing Sciences since his previous visit, describing the improvements as evidence of the benefits of sustained investment in health education.
In support of the institution’s development efforts, he donated N15 million to the school.
Reacting, the Hospital Director, Rev. Fr. Justin Okoro, commended Obi for his commitment to accountability, education and healthcare, as well as his dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians.
He expressed appreciation for the former governor’s contributions, saying they would continue to make a positive impact on society.
“Humanity will always remember you for your kindness, particularly to the less privileged in society,” Okoro said.
