The Senate on Wednesday passed a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow for the establishment of state police services across Nigeria.

The approval followed a manual voting process adopted by lawmakers after the chamber’s electronic voting system developed a technical fault.

Senators agreed to switch to manual voting amid concerns that the malfunctioning device could disenfranchise some members during consideration of the crucial legislation.

Under the procedure, each senator stood up, announced their name, and openly declared their position on the proposed state police framework.

The motion to adopt manual voting was moved by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, paving the way for the successful passage of the bill.
