The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to support the rescue of teachers and pupils abducted from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, deploying aerial surveillance assets to assist ongoing search-and-rescue operations.

This was disclosed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde during a courtesy visit by the representative of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh, on June 5, 2026.

According to a statement issued by NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the governor said the Air Force responded swiftly to the incident by deploying an aerial surveillance platform immediately after the abduction was reported.

Makinde noted that intelligence gathered through the surveillance missions has continued to provide valuable support to security agencies, enabling them to monitor developments and coordinate efforts aimed at securing the safe release of the victims.

He appealed to residents of the affected communities and the wider public to remain patient and cooperate with security agencies, assuring them that all necessary resources are being mobilised to resolve the situation.

The governor commended the Chief of the Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for their prompt intervention and sustained support, noting that the surveillance aircraft was made available while Oyo State's newly acquired aerial assets are still undergoing assembly at the NAF Base in Lagos.

Makinde explained that the state procured the aircraft following consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to maintenance support, technical expertise, and pilot training. He expressed confidence that the assets would significantly strengthen security operations across Oyo State and neighbouring states once they become fully operational.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Suleh conveyed the Air Force's solidarity with the government and people of Oyo State, reaffirming NAF's commitment to supporting efforts to secure the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils.

Suleh also praised the state government for its continued support for NAF projects and infrastructure development within the state.

"The NAF remains committed to working closely with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to safeguard lives and property while supporting efforts to address security challenges across the country," the statement said.

The victims, comprising pupils and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School, were abducted on May 15 during a deadly attack by suspected bandits in the area.

One of the teachers was reportedly killed while in captivity, further heightening public concern over the incident.

The abduction sparked protests by teachers' unions and civil society organisations in Ibadan and other parts of the country, with demonstrators demanding urgent action to secure the release of the victims.

Last week, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted teachers and students.

In response to the incident, President Bola Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and the deployment of a special rescue team to strengthen security operations and facilitate the recovery of the victims.
