A three-storey building under construction has partially collapsed in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State, leaving one person dead and another missing.

The incident occurred at about 12:19 p.m. on Friday at No. 1 Josephine Fingesi Street, off Wole Olateju Street, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

In a statement issued by the agency's Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, LASEMA said its Sharks Response Team was immediately deployed to the scene following distress calls reporting the collapse.

The agency disclosed that nine persons were affected by the incident. Seven adult males were rescued alive and stabilised by emergency responders, while one victim was confirmed dead at the scene. Another individual remained unaccounted for as rescue efforts continued.

"Seven adult males were rescued alive and stabilized by LRU Paramedics and LASAMBUS; one adult male was confirmed dead at the scene and his remains recovered; one adult male remains missing," the statement said.

LASEMA noted that search and rescue operations were ongoing, with responders carefully dismantling concrete slabs to locate the missing victim and ensure that no other persons remained trapped beneath the debris.

To support the operation, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) was mobilised to provide rod-cutting equipment, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) assisted with debris clearance and commodity bagging.

The agency added that all workers at the construction site were being accounted for to determine whether additional persons could still be trapped.

Emergency personnel involved in the operation include LASEMA Response Teams, LRU Paramedics, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, directed that rescue operations be intensified.

"Our priority remains saving lives. We are working methodically and in partnership with LASBCA and SEHMU to ensure no victim is left behind while maintaining safety for responders," he said.

Authorities have urged residents to stay away from the affected construction site and advised motorists to comply with traffic diversions in the area as emergency operations continue.
