Former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, says he supports Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election, while maintaining his endorsement of key economic policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Omo-Agege made the comments on Wednesday during an appearance on ARISE TV’s The Morning Show, where he addressed questions about his political realignment following his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former Delta Central senator insisted that his position on the federal government’s economic reforms remains unchanged, stressing that he continues to support measures such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the liberalisation of the naira exchange rate.
“When Mr President came up with the economic policies, most especially the naira floatation and subsidy removal, these are policies I supported and continue to support,” he said.
He also dismissed the idea that support for such reforms was exclusive to the ruling APC, noting that Obi had similarly advocated comparable economic measures.
Omo-Agege explained that his endorsement of Obi was not based on opposition to government policy, but on his belief that the reforms would enjoy greater public confidence under the former Anambra State governor.
“I just believe that under the new platform I’ve gone to, these policies will continue and the people, the majority of Nigerians who have issues with those policies, would feel more confident because they are more comfortable and trust Peter Obi that he will make these policies work more than Mr President could have done,” he said.
He further maintained that his support for the current administration’s economic direction should not be misinterpreted as political inconsistency, adding that the policies themselves remain necessary.
