Rights activist and social commentator, Aisha Yesufu, has clarified that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, is not her political godfather but rather someone she regards as her principal.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Yesufu explained that although she strongly supported Obi during the 2023 presidential election, she was never a member of the Labour Party.

According to her, her support for Obi was based on what she described as his empathy, patriotism, and commitment to Nigeria’s development.

“I don’t have a godfather. Peter Obi is not my godfather. He is my principal,” she said.

Yesufu disclosed that she was previously a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before moving to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

The activist also revealed her intention to transition from advocacy into active politics, noting that her primary focus as a prospective lawmaker would be to ensure accountability in governance.

She stated that if elected to represent the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate, she would prioritise oversight of the executive arm of government and oppose what she termed frivolous loan requests, irrespective of who occupies the presidency.

“I’m taking advocacy and activism into politics because, for me, as a lawmaker, if I get voted in, by the grace of God, my number one business is holding the executive accountable,” she said.

Yesufu further stressed that her loyalty to Obi would not prevent her from challenging policies she considers contrary to the public interest.

“You can’t come as president, Mr Peter Obi, being the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and just come to the Senate with frivolous applications for loans while I, Aisha Yesufu, represent the FCT,” she added.
