Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called on his supporters and Nigerians to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), following what he described as a collective decision to align with the emerging political platform.

Kwankwaso made the appeal in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, where he said the move was driven by a commitment to democratic values and the need to strengthen credible political institutions in the country.

“Yesterday, we took a bold and decisive step by formally joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress,” he said, adding that the decision reflects “a deep commitment to democratic values.”

He further stated that the objective of the new alignment was to provide Nigerians with a viable political platform capable of promoting opportunity and inclusive development.

“We are determined to provide our people with a credible platform where they can thrive and realise their full potential,” he added.

The former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party also urged Nigerians to support the party in its push for improved governance.

“I therefore call on all our dedicated supporters and well-meaning Nigerians to join the NDC and stand with us in this renewed fight for good governance and true democracy,” he said.

According to a report by *PUNCH Online*, Kwankwaso and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi were formally received into the NDC at an event held in Abuja, where they also called for internal unity and a focus on national development ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi, who recently announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress, said his decision to join the NDC was motivated by the need for a stable and peaceful political platform.

“We are coming here to be part of the peaceful family that will work hard to build a united, secure, prosperous Nigeria that will work for everybody,” he said.

He also praised Kwankwaso’s record in public service, particularly in education and social development, while urging political stakeholders to prioritize national unity over partisan rivalry.

In his remarks, Kwankwaso said discussions with the party leadership revealed a strong alignment in ideology, particularly on education, youth empowerment, security, and national cohesion.

“We realised that we are all on the same page, be it education, empowerment of young men and women, security, and a very peaceful, united Nigeria,” he said.

He further disclosed that the NDC was preparing to submit its membership register, reportedly scheduled for May 6, and urged Nigerians, including those in the diaspora, to register and participate actively in the party’s activities.
