The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation following the circulation of a viral video on social media allegedly showing a police officer fatally shooting a young man in Effurun, Delta State. The incident has triggered widespread public outrage and concern.

In an official statement, the Command confirmed the extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026. According to the police, officers attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence suggesting that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to ship a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

The statement disclosed that the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedures of the Nigeria Police Force, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The Command confirmed that the officer has since been arrested, issued a formal query, and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. He is expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for immediate disciplinary action and possible prosecution.

Condemning the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, assured the public that justice would be served. He reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on lawlessness, recklessness, and extra-judicial conduct.

The Commissioner also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and appealed to residents to remain calm while due process is carried out.
