Activist Aisha Yesufu has raised concerns about the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the commission’s recent statement addressing a purportedly fabricated X (formerly Twitter) account linked to its chairman, Joash Amupitan.

In a post shared on her verified X account on Tuesday, Yesufu criticised the electoral body’s handling of the issue, suggesting it could affect public confidence in future elections.

According to her, the controversy surrounding the alleged account raises doubts about INEC’s ability to conduct free, fair, and credible polls. She also questioned the commission’s response, describing it as an attempt to dismiss what she characterised as an очевидent issue.

Her remarks come amid ongoing public debate over INEC’s clarification regarding the social media account, which had circulated online bearing the chairman’s name.

INEC, in a statement issued on Monday, said the account in question was fabricated and part of a coordinated attempt to impersonate Amupitan. The commission stated that a forensic investigation, conducted with the support of independent cybersecurity experts, found no connection between the chairman and the viral posts attributed to him.

According to INEC, both the account, identified as “@joashamupitan,” and a widely circulated post stating “Victory is sure,” were products of digital manipulation.

The development has continued to generate mixed reactions, with stakeholders expressing varying views on its implications for public trust in the electoral body.
