The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a “serial contestant” in Nigeria’s presidential elections.
Wike’s remarks followed recent comments by Abubakar on the state of the nation and his future political ambitions. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, the former vice-president stated that the 2027 general election would be his final attempt to secure the presidency.
Abubakar has made multiple bids for Nigeria’s top office, contesting as a presidential candidate in 2007, 2019, and 2023. In his interview, he also criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as the worst in the country’s history.
Reacting on Thursday in Abuja, Wike dismissed Abubakar’s assessment of the current administration, arguing that it did not reflect the realities on the ground.
He further questioned the credibility of Abubakar’s claims, particularly in relation to governance and development, urging a comparison between the present condition of the FCT and the period when Abubakar served as vice-president.
Wike also emphasised that the Tinubu administration remains focused on governance and would not be distracted by political criticism, noting that government activities would continue irrespective of the election cycle.
