The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reiterated his development agenda for Northern Nigeria, emphasising agriculture, education, and poverty alleviation as critical drivers of economic growth and security.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Obi highlighted the need for strategic collaboration and targeted investments to unlock the vast economic potential of the region.

He disclosed ongoing engagements with key northern political figures, including Nasir El-Rufai and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, aimed at building support for his vision.

“I am working with them so they can back me. Nobody can do what I intend to do in the northern part of Nigeria,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor described Northern Nigeria as the country’s greatest asset, pointing to its vast arable land and untapped agricultural potential. He argued that with proper investment and modernisation, agriculture could generate more revenue than crude oil.

“The North is Nigeria’s greatest wealth. There is vast land for agriculture, and we can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil,” he stated.

Obi further linked the region’s security challenges to poverty and lack of opportunities, stressing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive development.

“If we want to secure the North today, we need to invest in agriculture, pull people out of poverty, and invest in education and healthcare,” he added.

Reaffirming his commitment, Obi expressed confidence in his ability to transform the region.

“We have a future in the North, and I can see it. I will rebuild the North,” he said.
