Former Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has declared his intention to contest the Delta North senatorial seat in the 2027 general election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okowa made the announcement at his residence in Asaba while hosting a delegation of political leaders from the Delta North senatorial district. The delegation, led by the Deputy Governor of the state, Monday Onyeme, included former and serving lawmakers, government officials, and key stakeholders from the nine local government areas in the district.
The call for Okowa’s candidacy was formally initiated through a motion moved by Ndudi Elumelu and seconded by Nnamdi Ezechi, who represents Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani federal constituency. The motion received unanimous support from the delegation.
The stakeholders described Okowa as a “seasoned administrator” and “consensus builder,” noting that his experience as both a former governor and senator positions him to provide effective representation at the national level.
In his response, Okowa expressed appreciation for the endorsement, stating that he was honoured by the show of unity and confidence reposed in him.
“I feel very loved and honoured by this show of support. Considering the calibre of individuals present and the unity of purpose demonstrated, I have no choice but to accept,” he said.
He added that he had already been considering consultations with political leaders across the district before making a formal declaration.
“I accept your request to run for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Delta North senatorial district. Politics is a learning process, and I will continue to learn on a daily basis,” Okowa said.
The former governor also acknowledged the continued support of the Anioma people, recalling their backing during his 2011 senatorial bid and subsequent governorship elections. He expressed confidence in their support ahead of the 2027 polls.
In a notable remark, Okowa apologised to the district for what he described as a “mistake” in supporting the emergence of Ned Nwoko as the current senator representing Delta North.
His declaration sets the stage for a potentially significant political contest in the district ahead of the 2027 general election.
