Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned that ongoing terrorist attacks across Nigeria, if not decisively addressed, pose a serious threat to the country’s peace, unity, and long-term stability.

Atiku made the statement in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday following reports of a fresh attack in parts of Niger State, where several lives were lost. According to Channels Television, the incident affected communities in Bagna and Yelwa, resulting in the deaths of 14 vigilante members and two civilians, including a woman.

Condemning the killings, Atiku described the attacks as unacceptable and urged the Federal Government to strengthen efforts to protect citizens.

“I condemn, in unequivocal terms, the continued acts of terrorism and brigandage that threaten the peace, unity, and stability of our nation,” he wrote.

“Such attacks on innocent citizens are a grave affront to our shared humanity and must never be allowed to define who we are as a people.”

He extended condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with affected communities, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government.

“The foremost responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. It is therefore imperative that renewed urgency, coordination, and resolve be brought to bear in confronting this challenge and restoring public confidence,” he added.

Atiku also acknowledged international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, including support from the United States, describing such partnerships as vital to addressing global security threats.

“This cooperation underscores the importance of sustained international partnership in addressing threats to peace and security. Nigeria will endure, and with collective resolve, we shall prevail,” he said.
