Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to actively defend the country’s democracy, warning against any attempt to transition to a one-party system.

Obi, in a statement shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, who is now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said members of the party and other pro-democracy Nigerians remain united in opposing efforts that could weaken Nigeria’s multi-party framework.

He stressed the importance of protecting the nation’s democratic institutions, urging citizens who value unity, peace, and national security to take a stand. Obi warned that moves to erode political plurality could undermine democratic development and national stability.

“We, members and leaders of the ADC, alongside other well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy, insist that our democracy must not be undermined,” he said. “We reject any move towards a one-party system and call on all Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security to join us in defending our democracy.”
