The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has clarified that he has not endorsed any candidate for the governorship or other elective offices in Rivers State, emphasizing that his only political commitment is to President Bola Tinubu for the Presidency.
Speaking on Monday night at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja, during a joint gathering of stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, Wike stated that his support for Tinubu has always been public and consistent.
The former Rivers State governor cautioned against the rush for endorsements and warned aspirants that no governor from any state can impose a candidate on Rivers. He stressed that lessons from past election cycles must guide current political activities.
Acknowledging the role of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, Wike described their contributions as pivotal to shaping the state’s political landscape. He urged members of the joint coalition to prioritize the collective interest of Rivers State, noting that only those genuinely committed to this goal would benefit.
Wike also emphasized that the coalition’s strength is rooted in unity and commitment rather than financial influence. He warned that external forces are attempting to exploit their success by sowing divisions. “If we were not working together, if we were not united, it would be difficult. People are not happy that we are working together, so they will do anything to ensure we are divided,” he said.
Expressing disappointment with individuals who, after benefiting from appointments facilitated by the coalition, turn against its leadership, Wike described such behavior as a failure of character and cautioned that attempts to undermine others through deceit would not succeed.
Clarifying rumours about private endorsements for elective offices, Wike reaffirmed that his public and private positions remain aligned, with the sole recognized endorsement being that of President Tinubu.
He commended Rivers State council chairmen, elders, and the leadership of both parties for their coordination in the meeting, noting that the absence of complaints about inclusiveness reflects the success of the gathering.
