Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has raised concerns over Nigeria’s worsening electricity situation, revealing that he spends approximately ₦40,000 daily to power his home.
In an interview with African Independent Television (AIT), the 78-year-old actor highlighted the financial strain caused by erratic power supply, which affects millions of Nigerians. Edochie broke down his daily energy expenditures, stating that he spends ₦10,000 on electricity units, ₦20,000 on diesel for his main generator, and ₦10,000 on petrol for a smaller generator.
“I spend about ₦10,000 every day buying electricity units. Then I spend ₦20,000 on diesel to power the generator and another ₦10,000 on petrol for a smaller generator. That brings the total to ₦40,000 daily just to provide electricity in my house,” he said.
The veteran actor noted that this amounts to roughly ₦1.2 million per month, reflecting the escalating cost of energy in the country.
“It disturbs me a lot because I’m not just working for light. Then I listen to people who are only interested in getting into politics and enjoying power. Nobody seems to be bothered about what’s happening to the common man,” Edochie added.
His comments mirror growing frustrations among Nigerians over unreliable electricity supply, with many households reporting as little as five hours of power daily, despite the government’s efforts to improve distribution through the band system.
The actor’s disclosure underscores the broader challenges facing the country’s power sector and highlights the heavy reliance on costly alternative sources of electricity, such as generators, to meet basic household needs.
