The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that sixteen officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) are under investigation for acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, including allegations of plotting to overthrow the government.

The Armed Forces made the disclosure in a press statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, on Monday, January 26. According to the statement, the investigations, which began following an initial DHQ press release in October 2025, have now been concluded and forwarded to the appropriate superior authority for further action.

“The comprehensive investigation process has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel. The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the AFN,” the statement said.

Those found with cases to answer are expected to be formally arraigned before a military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. The DHQ emphasized that the measures are disciplinary in nature, aimed at preserving order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.

The Armed Forces reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority, assuring Nigerians that all actions are being taken within the framework of fairness and due process.
