The ancient town of Inyi, Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, came alive with colour, pageantry and solemn reverence as thousands of mourners from across Nigeria gathered to honour the life and legacy of Ogbuefi Clement Nwagbogu Ilobanafor (Esesuo Agbara I), whose royal funeral rites culminated on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

The week-long celebration of life for the revered patriarch began on Monday, January 5, 2026, with a Christian wake-keep held at his Ozegu-Inyi compound. The gathering, which commenced at about 5:00 pm, provided family members, friends, associates and community leaders the opportunity to share fond memories and heartfelt testimonies of a man widely celebrated as a peacebuilder, community developer and custodian of African values.

On Tuesday, January 6, the atmosphere in Inyi shifted from quiet reflection to a grand celebration as dignitaries, traditional rulers, professionals and cultural groups converged to witness the Royal Funeral Rites of the late nonagenarian, who passed on peacefully at the age of 93.

A solemn Funeral Mass was held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Enugwu-Inyi, drawing an expansive congregation that reflected the far-reaching impact of the Esesuo Agbara I. The Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr. Francis Chiadi, OP, Provincial Promoter of the Dominican Family, Order of Preachers (Dominican Province of St. Joseph the Worker, Nigeria and Ghana), alongside Rev. Fr. Dr. Chibe Ofor of the Enugu Catholic Diocese.

In his homily, Fr. Chiadi described death for a faithful Christian as a passage rather than an end. “The death of a faithful Christian is not an end but a transition. We gather not simply to mourn, but to celebrate God’s faithfulness and superabundant blessings,” he said.

“We pray that our father, who died in faith, may be in heaven to intercede for us. In return, we owe him emulation of his exemplary legacies.”

Rev. Fr. Ofor, in his remarks, emphasised the enduring nature of Pa Ilobanafor’s values.

“Though Pa is gone, his thoughts continue to enthrone peace and serenity. His presence among his children and community was like a calm breeze—pleasant and soothing,” he noted, adding that selfless service defined the late chief’s life both in the Church and in the community.

Following the Mass, the streets of Enugwu-Inyi and Ozegu-Inyi transformed into a vibrant tapestry of culture as mourners travelled from far and near to pay their final respects. Fleets of luxury convoys, cultural troupes, age-grade groups and well-wishers filled the town, reflecting what many described as one of the largest gatherings in the community’s history.

The Ozegu Community Primary School field became the epicentre of the ceremonies, as villagers, royal fathers, chiefs, in-laws, dynasties, community delegations and cultural groups lined up with gifts, dances and tributes in honour of the departed patriarch.

The final journey to the ancestral Ilobanafor compound was marked by a regal procession attended by notable personalities, including HRH Igwe Mike Mberedeogu (Obibi I of Obibi Kingdom), Reginald Oguejifor of Obibi Kingdom, Pharm. Ambrose Ezeh, National Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Pharm. Sir Bankole Aminu Ezebuilo, National Chairman of the Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP), and Pharm. Maureen Nwafor, National Chairman of CPAN, among others—underscoring the late chief’s stature as a pillar of ancient institutions and modern professional networks.

Paying tribute during the ceremony, Professor Isaac Olawale Albert, founder of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), described Pa Ilobanafor as a man whose life embodied love, diligence and unwavering devotion to peace.

Peers and associates, including Mr. Rufus Chukwu, recounted how Pa’s leadership and stewardship fostered harmony and progress within their forums. "He believed in results, not noise,” Chukwu said, a sentiment echoed by many who described the Esesuo Agbara I as a cheerful giver and a true peacemaker.

The children of the late chief were present in full strength, offering tributes to a father they described as disciplined, faith-driven and exemplary. Speaking on behalf of the family, the eldest son, Mr. Chris Ilobanafor, urged guests to take comfort in the enduring legacy of a man whose home was always open to all.

Prince Cletus Ilobanafor, son of the deceased and MD/CEO of CEOAFRICA, stood firmly alongside his siblings, supported by close friends and associates, as the family received guests and condolences throughout the ceremonies.

As the sun set over Oji River, the celebration concluded not in sorrow but in gratitude, for a life well lived. To many in Inyi and beyond, Pa. Ogbuefi Clement Ilobanafor (Esesuo Agbara I) will be remembered as a man of integrity, faith, humility and service, whose legacy of peace and devotion continues to illuminate generations.

Among other notable attendees were members of the Enugu Unite Exclusive Club, led by its President, Chief Nnajioffor Ede, traders from Computer Village, Pharm. Lizette Ezenekwe, National Publicity Secretary of PSN, and Pharmacist Emeka Okpana, Chairman, PSN Anambra State.
