The Republic of Benin has prolonged the presidential tenure from five to seven years.

It has also established an upper chamber of the legislature.

On Saturday, November 15, 2025, the lawmakers likewise upheld the cap on presidential terms, which is still fixed at two terms.

The amendment was adopted by a large majority of MPs, with 90 votes in favour and 19 against.

The senate will be composed of at least 25 parliamentarians, some appointed by the head of state and others ex officio members, such as former presidents.
