Ilhan Omar, the congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th District, has criticised President Donald Trump and some Republican lawmakers, saying their recent remarks show that the United States is “being led by idiots”.
Omar’s comments came after Trump attacked her in a social media post, accusing her, a Somali descent, of “telling us how to run our country”.
Trump also called for Omar’s impeachment following a narrowly defeated attempt in congress to censure her over remarks related to the death of conservative activist, Charlie Kirk.
On September 10, Kirk, a close Trump ally, was assassinated.
Omar later retweeted a post that some critics interpreted as suggesting she blamed Kirk for his own death. The move drew backlash from Republicans and Kirk’s supporters.
In response, Nancy Mace of South Carolina introduced a resolution to censure Omar for allegedly “smearing Charlie Kirk”, but the measure was voted down 214–213 on Wednesday.
“Somalia is consistently ranked among the world’s most corrupt countries, including bribery, embezzlement, and a dysfunctional government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America!
… What SCUM we have in our country, telling us what to do, and how to do it,” Trump wrote on social media.
Speaking on The Weekend Prime, Omar dismissed Trump’s remarks, describing him as someone “always unhinged, always derailed, always creating chaos”.
She accused the president of harbouring an obsession with immigrants and mocked his call for her impeachment.
“He’s supposed to be the president of the United States, heading off to Europe to represent us. When he does, he’s educated enough to understand that members of congress can’t be impeached,” she said.
She added that comments from Trump and his Republican allies “expose themselves for how stupid they are”, which she said is “embarrassing for us as a country”.
“When they’re saying they’re going to deport me knowing fully well that you cannot deport an American citizen, what that displays for not just Americans but folks on an international platform is that our country is being led by idiots, and that is not something that we would be comfortable with,” she said.
“I feel great sadness that these are the kinds of people representing us.”
