As we observe the 2nd Annual Malnutrition Awareness Week from September 8-12, 2025, the West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN) is highlighting a concerning statistic: "30-40% of patients treated for cancer are malnourished. This underscores the vital role that nutrition plays in supporting health and recovery during cancer treatment.

Malnutrition can significantly affect the treatment outcomes and overall well-being of cancer patients. Factors contributing to malnutrition include the side effects of cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, which can lead to loss of appetite, nausea, and difficulty swallowing. Additionally, the body’s increased nutritional needs during treatment can make it challenging for patients to maintain a healthy weight and nutritional status.

WASPEN emphasizes the importance of proactive health measures. It’s essential for patients and caregivers to monitor nutritional intake and seek help if they observe signs of malnutrition, such as rapid weight loss, fatigue, or changes in appetite. Consulting with healthcare professionals can lead to interventions that enhance overall treatment effectiveness. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” reminds us that early detection and action can make a significant difference in health outcomes.

To further promote health and reduce cancer risks, individuals are encouraged to adopt a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while avoiding processed foods, excessive alcohol, and tobacco use. Regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight are also essential components of cancer prevention.

During this Malnutrition Awareness Week, we are reminded that health is wealth. By prioritizing nutrition and health, individuals can significantly impact their well-being and resilience, particularly in the face of illnesses like cancer.

Join the fight against malnutrition and raise awareness using the hashtags #ASPENMAW25 and #WASPEN25. Together, we can contribute to a healthier future for all.
