During the WASPEN 2025 Conference held on June 17, 2025, at the Trauma Center of the National Hospital Abuja, Dr. Olugbenga Bello, representing the FCT Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, Dr. Fasewe Dolapo, addressed the pressing issue of malnutrition in the Federal Capital Territory. He pointed out the alarming prevalence of the dual burden of malnutrition within the region, stating, "Over 50% of middle-aged men in the FCT are affected by potbellies, which is one form of malnutrition."

Emphasizing the critical importance of adequate nutrition for health and well-being, Dr. Bello noted that malnutrition plays a significant role in the genesis and outcomes of various health issues. "This conference is more than just sharing knowledge and expertise; it is a celebration of our collective commitment to improving patient care and outcomes," he declared.

He commended the government, led by Honorable Nyesom Wike, for its concerted efforts to reduce the number of malnourished children, including building the capacity of health workers across the six area councils and enhancing budgetary allocations for nutrition activities. He assured attendees that the government will continue to support these initiatives and other related efforts in the fight against malnutrition.

At the conclusion of his address, participants were encouraged to engage actively in discussions throughout the conference, themed "Bridging the Gap: Integrating Hospital and Community Malnutrition Care in Developing Countries," with the hope that collaborative efforts would lead to practical solutions for enhancing nutritional outcomes in the region.

This significant dialogue and cooperation among various stakeholders highlight the urgent need for strategic actions to tackle malnutrition effectively and improve health outcomes in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.
