Hajia Wosilat Giwa, the Chairperson of the Governing Council Board at the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, has lauded the Geneith Health Competition as more than just a health program; she characterized it as a "movement—a powerful call to roll back malaria through education, advocacy, and active engagement." Speaking at the launch of the competition, Giwa highlighted the ongoing battle against malaria, emphasizing the urgent need for effective intervention strategies.
"It is an honor to be at this pivotal moment in Nigeria's health advocacy journey," Giwa stated. “I salute this bold and commendable initiative by CEOAFRICA in strategic partnership with Geneith Pharmaceuticals, which resonates with our efforts as part of the 2025 World Malaria Day commemoration.” She underscored the seriousness of malaria as a global health threat and lamented that sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria, carries a significant burden. "Most of the deaths globally occur in sub-Saharan Africa, with up to 95-97% of global malaria deaths. Nigeria, alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger, accounts for more than half of these global deaths."
Giwa discussed several critical factors contributing to the spread of malaria, particularly noting that "human movement, especially in high-density areas where people are constantly on the move, makes us all vulnerable." She expressed that the Geneith Health Competition is not only timely but powerful, as it calls for immediate action.
"The persistent challenges we face in controlling malaria include poverty, which limits access to prevention and treatment, as well as resistance to insecticide-treated nets," she explained. "Mosquitoes evolve faster than our interventions, but we aren’t helpless. The introduction of malaria vaccines and the emergence of next-generation insecticide-treated nets provide us with hope."
Giwa reinforced the idea that prevention remains the best method of intervention. “This isn’t just a campaign; it is a movement that targets the right audience. If you want to achieve progress in any intervention, target young people. They are energetic, intelligent, and fully capable of driving this movement to success,” she stated, highlighting the role of youth in health advocacy.
She concluded, “The Geneith Health Competition is designed to roll back malaria through education, advocacy, and active engagement. It is organized by two forward-thinking institutions whose vision for a malaria-free Nigeria is being translated into reality today.”
With her support, Hajia Wosilat Giwa's endorsement of the Geneith Health Competition not only elevates the initiative's mission but also inspires a collective effort to combat malaria, particularly among Nigeria’s youth.
