Celebrating a Legacy: Prof. Adegoke Falade Honored at 70th Birthday and Retirement Luncheon

On Friday, April 25, 2025, the Department of Paediatrics at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Ibadan/University College Hospital (UCH), hosted a glamorous Valedictory Luncheon to honour Professor Adegoke Gbadegesin Falade on the occasion of his 70th Birthday and Retirement. The event took place at The Dome Event Centre, Secretariat Road, Ibadan, and was attended by a distinguished array of guests, colleagues, family, and friends.

The gathering was graced by prominent figures in the medical community, including Prof. K.O. Adebowale, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, represented by Prof. Peter O. Olapegba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). Other esteemed attendees included Prof. T.O. Ogundiran, Provost of the College of Medicine, represented by Prof. Adebiyi, and Prof. J.A. Otegbayo, Chief Medical Doctor at UCH. Special guest of honor, Prof. Babatunde O. Onadeko, along with Prof. T.A. Lawal, Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, were also present, demonstrating the high regard in which Prof. Falade is held.

In his welcome address, Prof. B.J. Brown, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, celebrated Professor Falade's meticulous service, stating, "He is a man that has truly served this department with excellence. His impact reaches beyond the University of Ibadan and UCH. Congratulations, sir, and I welcome you all to this great event."

Prof. Olapegba echoed these sentiments, highlighting the remarkable journey of Professor Falade, "Today, we celebrate an outstanding scholar, mentor, and physician. Your contributions to the College of Medicine and pediatric care globally are monumental. You have consistently demonstrated your commitment to nurturing future generations of medical professionals, and your legacy of excellence in teaching and research will endure."

Acknowledging Professor Falade's significant accomplishments, Prof. Onadeko shared fond memories, saying, "I feel honored to know him. He distinguished himself not just in Nigeria but on an international scale. Despite all his achievements, he embodies simplicity and humility.

Prof. Otegbayo recounted the professor's career milestones, mentioning, "Professor Falade's journey began on December 2, 1992, as an Honorary Consultant at UCH. His leadership qualities became evident when he served as Head of the Department of Paediatrics. His research, particularly in pneumonia and asthma, has left a lasting impression on our medical community."

During an exclusive interview with CEOAFRICA, Professor Adegoke Falade humbly reflected on his 70 years, stating, "I thank my creator for saving my life and allowing me to make a meaningful impact in saving children's lives. My priority has always been to lower child mortality, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve." He also encouraged future medical practitioners to pursue their passion genuinely, noting, "You can't force anyone; it should come from the heart."

His wife, Mrs. Adejoke Elizabeth Falade, expressed her admiration: "After 45 years of marriage, he remains compassionate, caring and loving. I wish him long life so we can share many more moments together."

Dr. Olushola Ibiyemi, a close colleague, praised Prof. Falade, saying, "He is a man of excellence and a great researcher. I wish him continued health, and may all his aspirations for our hospital be fulfilled."

Guests at the event, including Mrs. Farayola and Mrs. Fagbore, celebrated Prof. Falade's milestone, hoping he would enjoy many more birthdays in good health. "He is a very good man, we pray he will live long to eat the fruit of his labor and celebrate more birthdays in good health."

The luncheon culminated in an atmosphere of joy, gratitude, and recognition for a man whose remarkable contributions have shaped the field of pediatrics and impacted countless lives. As celebrations concluded, attendees reflected on the extraordinary legacy of Professor Adegoke Gbadegesin Faladean enduring force in pediatric medicine whose influence will continue to inspire future generations.
