A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly has refuted claims in some quarters that President Bola Tinubu is supporting the call for the return of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.

The lawmaker who doesn’t want his name in print, disclosed this on Sunday, and noted that Obasa may be suspended for embarrassing the President.

He stressed that the report that President Tinubu is backing the return of Obasa as Speaker “is a fallacy, a total spin in the media to test the waters”.

He said, “Since January 13 that he was impeached, Obasa is gone and I can categorically tell you that he’s gone for good or bad. He’s not coming back as the Number Three Citizen of the Centre of Excellence.

“In fact, you know the Nigerian practice is that if and when a Speaker is suspended like that, he or she will be placed on suspension to allow the successor to effectively take charge.

“But those close to the President are putting pressure on us not to suspend him. However, with the way Obasa is going, we may suspend him and heavens won’t fall”.

Recall that there were reports making rounds in social media that the president and his wife are putting pressure on the lawmakers to allow Obasa’s return as Speaker.

According to the reports, it was said that Obasa should be given a soft landing, be allowed to return and after a few weeks, he’ll resign voluntarily.

He added, “What I’ll say is simple. People behind the story are politically daft. That is the truth. How could anybody write and publish a story like that? Does it make any sense at all? That Obasa should come back as Speaker and later resign. This is the first time I’ll read this type of a stupid story.

“That story is even an embarrassment. They don’t know they are embarrassing the office of the Commander-in-Chief by mentioning President Tinubu’s name.

“Are they daft? Is that the way power is given? Is Obasa the first speaker to be impeached in the country? What the President, GAC members and some elders are telling us is that we shouldn’t suspend him.

“But, with the way Obasa and a few people close to him are spinning stories in the media, we may have to suspend him soon. There’s no way any reasonable person will allow a snake to stay in the same room with him or her.

“We had a meeting on this matter in a few days. Mojisola Meranda is our Speaker. Final. For even embarrassing the president, we’ll tell Obasa we have the powers to deal with him.”
