Pope Francis has appointed Professor Roberto Bernabei as his new personal doctor.

The Vatican disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

It was also stated that Bernabei, who is an expert in health care for the elderly, will be taking over from the previous one who died from coronavirus complications.

Bernabei, 69, leads the geriatrics and rehabilitative medicine department at Rome’s Gemelli, the Catholic hospital where popes are traditionally treated.

He was president of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and also a member of the European Academy for Medicine of Ageing

Recall that Fabrizio Soccorsi, Pope’s former personal doctor died in January from coronavirus complications.

The 78-year-old physician was earlier admitted at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for a previous health issue on December 26.

He, however, contracted the virus but later passed away due to his health issues.
