The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a journalist, Kench Okenyi, over a report on alleged age falsification of the state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan.

It was reported that Okenyi was arrested on Friday by a police team led by one CSP Chris Amanyi.

According to the report, the journalist was released around midnight on Saturday, as he was also allegedly denied access to a lawyer and his relatives.

Okenyi said he was detained for over eight hours.

“I was arrested on Friday on the orders of the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State for publishing a report detailing how the CP was due for retirement five months ago having attained the statutory age for retirement in the police which is 60 years.

“The police team led by CSP Chris Amanyi arrested me and held me for over eight hours without access to a lawyer,” he said.

It was learnt that the platform that originally published the report against the police commissioner had retracted it.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, promised to react to the arrest of the journalist on Tuesday
