Israeli parliament has Wednesday passed a law to enable the government limit public protest during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.
The controversial law which was approved in a 46-38 votes in an overnight session permits the government to announce a state of emergency for a week, during which it would be able to limit participation in demonstrations to one kilometre from the participants’ homes.
In Israel the new legislation was broadly seen as a measure to hush the weekly rallies outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem.
Myriads of Israelis have been rallying in major crossroads across the country and outside the official Prime Minister’s residence every Saturday calling for the resignation of Netanyahu over corruption charges against him and his mishandling of the corona virus outbreak and the economic crisis.
Netanyahu is undergoing a criminal trial over three charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three separate cases.
