Mali’s interim president, Bah Ndaw, chosen to head a transitional government following a coup last month, has been sworn in today during ceremonies in the capital Bamako.

A committee appointed by the junta which seized power on August 18, overthrowing President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, selected Ndaw, a 70-year-old retired colonel, as provisional president and he is due to lead a transition government for a maximum of 18 months before organising national elections.

Colonel Assimi Goita, who led the military junta, was also sworn in as interim vice president.

The ceremony on Friday took place in a theatre filled with officials dressed in military fatigues, senior judges, and foreign diplomats.

The Supreme Court Chief Prosecutor, Boya Dembele during the ceremony said the challenges facing both men were “enormous”.

BREAKING: Police confirms arrest of knife attack suspect

Officers have arrested the suspected attacker who injured four people in a knife assault in Paris on Friday near the former offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

French police said that the man was arrested near the sprawling Place de la Bastille, adding he was the only suspect in an attack that came as a trial is underway for suspected accomplices in the January 2015 attack on Charlie Hebdo that killed 12 people.

More to come…….
