Members of Parents Teachers Association, PTA, Grace High School, Gbagada, Lagos, have openly expressed their dissatisfaction following the school’s directives that students, who are preparing for the approaching West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) should lodge in hotels or pick them up daily from school in order to meet up with the timing of the exam.

According to report, parents who went in protest against the standing order yesterday were locked outside the entrance of the school for hours as one of the aggrieved parents, Mrs. Ada, accused the school of asking them to sign an “indemnity” if the parents want their children to resume.

The parent expressed surprise on the new order because according to him, the parents had earlier asked the school Management through the school’s online platform their plans for the SSS3 students when the government announced the school resumption plans.

The aggrieved parent revealed that the school management didn’t give them clue about the new development as this was for the first time announced during an online PTA meeting held on the 31st of July when the parents when they were asked to sign the indemnity form that left the parents wondering why since the order isn’t coming from the government.  He recalled that the standing order from the government only states that the school should put certain things in place for schools to resume.

While emphasizing on the difficulty in picking up their children every day, the parent also said that parents have longed requested for access to the school’s hostel because that is part of the agreement with the school He further accused the school of calling armed mobile policemen on them to disallow them from gaining entrance into the school premises.

In reaction to the issue, the PTA Chairman, Engr. Matin Etta, of Grace High School, however, suggested that the School Management should beacon on parents who live close to the school to accommodate those ones far from it rather than entertaining the idea to lodge the school children in hotels considering the increasing case of rape in the country.

However, the school Public Relations Officer, Mr. Aypdeji Ayopo, has promised to give possible feedback to parents soon pertaining to the matter.
