Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology, Eleyele Ibadan on Monday held a special lecture in commemoration of 2020 international women’s day, with the topic: AN EQUAL WORLD IS AN ENABLED WORLD: ELIMINATING ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPHERES.
The lecture which had the wife of the executive governor of Oyo state, Her Excellency, Engr. (Mrs) Tamunominini Olufunke Makinde as the special guest of honour encompasses teachings on violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres.
Speaking during the occasion, the guest lecturer, Prof (Mrs) Stella Olusola Odebode of the department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, University of Ibadan noted that women are not being given the equal right in the society and all these leads to violence.
She noted that both male and female should be given equal access to opportunities and resources, right to be who she/he wants to become, no discrimination and all forms of violence should be eliminated.
According to her, forms of violence includes rape, battery, acid attack, cyber bullying, verbal assault, sexual harassment, force impregnation, etc.
She enumerated the effects of gender violence to include depression, substance abuse, psychological problems, low self esteem, less emotional support and so on.
She recommend that in order to end violence against women, the government should empower women through education, punish perpetrators, ensure positive betrayal of women on the media, educating boys and men.
In the same vein, the Provost of the college, Mr M. A. Ganiyu described the lecture as educative, informative and communicative.
He said “the lecture was educative, informative and communicative as well”.
“The lecture touched every aspect, areas concerned, particular the lecture has met the objective of the college because as a college of health technology, promoting health care services and health care provision and major categories of our guest are women and ladies, that is why the college is collaborating and commemorating the day , International women’s day”, he added.
