Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state may be made to face criminal prosecution for alleged double registration once he completes his second term in 2023, according to reports.

The Nation quotes Festus Okoye, the national commissioner in charge of voters education and information committee at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as speaking on the issue.

Okoye said the issue of double registration against Bello had not been swept away but that INEC cannot act since he has immunity.

“By the time the immunity expires, the commission will meet and take a decision on the next line of action,” Okoye said. INEC had investigated three of its staff over the case. Indicted, two of the staff were dismissed.

Okoye said: “We started with our staff who were implicated in the double registration first while we have to wait until the governor ceases to enjoy immunity, which protects him against prosecution.”
